Bra Color Controversy

Everybody knows that looking at someone's facebook profile can tell us a lot of information, maybe too much, about their lives- relationship status, hair color, favorite movie, bra color? Women are now taking stand against breast cancer in a new and unique way by stating the color of the bra they are wearing on their facebook statuses. It is resulting in some controversy, but you know the old saying, there is no such thing as bad press.

According to the Washington Post, a message was sent to women all across the globe promoting this event. The message read "Some fun is going on . . . just write the color of your bra in your status. Just the color, nothing else. It will be neat to see if this will spread the wings of breast cancer awareness. It will be fun to see how long it takes before people wonder why all the girls have a color in their status Haha."

As the mysterious single word statuses multiplied across facebook, many curious people went right to Google to determine the meaning. What was the reaction of many people? Anger. Groups such as "Awareness For Breast Cancer is not about the COLOR of your BRA!" and "I Kept My Bra Color To Myself - And I Still Support Breast Cancer!" have shown up all across facebook and naysayers continue to oppose this silly little movement.

A silly movement is just what this is. Breast cancer is a very serious disease that hits thousands of women all across the globe every day. BUT-Anything that brings attention to the fight against breast cancer is fine by me. It is disappointing that numerous people have brought a good and fun movement, though "silly," and created a moral debate. Yes, a woman's bra color may be slightly personal, but it's not like they are posting photos! Come on, people!

"Many survivors were upset by the now infamous bra color postings of earlier this week. I was not, and I AM a survivor. It was stupid, but I did participate. Why? Because it got people talking about breast cancer. How did bra color relate to breast cancer? It didn't, but it got us talking. So, in a way it worked," said Marcia Hahnfeld Deitrick, a breast cancer survivor.

So why not put your bra color on your status? It isn't causing anyone pain. It is only bringing awareness to a noble cause. So, with pride and hope, I say PINK! - 29723

Geranium Is a Scent Worth Remembering

Background

Geranium flowers grow in many gardens throughout the United States and around the world. This fragrant perennial plant, taxonomically identified in the genus Pelargonium, is known for its distinctly powerful leafy-rose scent. There are over 250 natural species of Pelargionium with hundred of hybrids and thousands of cultivars (variety produced by selective breeding). Although commonly known as geranium, there is genus with the same name. The genus Geranium and the genus Pelargonium share the same family (Geraniaceae) but they are different from one another in their cultivation as well as their botanical features. Species of plant in Geranium are known to be hardy and can grow almost anywhere. Pelargonium species on the other hand are specifically cultivated and are of great commercial value. They can also be distinguished by their differing flower patterns.

Indigenous to South Africa, geranium was first introduced into Europe in the 17th century and later hybridized. These hybrid cultivars have a wide variety of scents, including rose, citrus, mint, coconut and nutmeg. The main species cultivated for the aromatherapy and perfume industry is Pelargonium graveolens, or rose geranium. This specific species is indispensable in the aromatherapy industry and highly prized in the perfume industry. Extracted by steam distillation of the leaves and branches, the rose geranium essential oil is used by aromatherapists to assist with a wide array of maladies such as mood swings, skin disorders and feminine menstrual irregularities as well as to balance feminine hormone levels during menopause. Rose geranium has similar chemical constituents as those present in rose oil, namely geraniol, linalool and citronellol, thus making it a favorable alternative for the perfume industry to the more expensive essential oil of rose petals. Such a fragrance is also widely used by the cosmetic industry as a component in soaps, detergents, creams and lotions. The essential oil itself is extracted from the leaves and branches of the plant. After cutting, a common practice is to partially dry the plants in order to increase the yield of oil.

Beginning in the 1880s the much revered French perfume industry established extensive plantations of geranium on Reunion (a small French island located in the Indian Ocean). Geranium oil is also produced in other parts of the world namely China, Egypt, and Morocco. Geranium oils are usually distinguished by its country of origin prefix with the Reunion (known as Bourbon) essential oil regarded as the most significant variety of geranium oil due to its pronounced rosy fragrance as well as potent medicinal qualities.

Geranium May Be a Medical Treatment Option

In recent years, the main media have reported on the rise of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. This week in the news is no exception. In the January 2010 issue of Microbiology, researchers from the National University of Ireland in Galway published their findings on how disinfectants might lead to bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics, especially in hospitals. It is standard hospital procedure to use surface disinfectants to prevent the spread of bacteria; if disinfectants are non-effective than antibiotics are used. The study looked at the response of the gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa (known to be the cause of many hospital infections) to increasing amounts of disinfectant. What they found were bacteria not only able to develop immunity from the disinfectant but also become resistant to ciprofloxacin (a commonly-prescribed antibiotic) without direct exposure to the drug. Researchers conclude that bacteria resistance to both controls could be a serious threat to hospital patients and thus urge medical practitioners to rethink how infections are handled.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is wide-spread in soil and water and any surface in contact with soil or water. Yet, it is an opportunistic microbe and will only infect a compromised host or tissues of that host that have been compromised in some way. It is an epitome of an opportunistic host in humans. If a person's immune system is compromised, it can cause urinary tract infections, respiratory system infections, dermatitis, soft tissue infections, bacteremia, bone and joint infections, gastrointestinal infections and a variety of systemic infections, particularly in patients with severe burns and in cancer and AIDS patients who are immunosuppressed. As seen above, P. aeruginosa can be a serious threat to patients in hospitals, especially patients with cancer, burns and cystic fibrosis. The case fatality rate in these patients is near 50 percent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the overall prevalence of P. aeruginosa infections in US hospitals is approximately 4 per 1000 discharges (0.4%). According to one report, the gastrointestinal infection rates among hospitalized patients increases to 20% within 72 hours of admission. With such findings, it is clear that other solutions must be found.

There is a potential solution to this growing concern of current hospital antimicrobial practices. In a 2006 study conducted by Loyola College in India (BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine 2006 Nov 30; 6:39) researchers found that geranium oil (along with several other essential oils) exhibited strong activity against selected bacterial strains, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Other bacteria strains shown to be affected by the in vitro (outside a living organism, usually in a test tube or Petri dish) application of geranium oil were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia , Proteus vulgaris and Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus.

Things to Consider

For a number of centuries, nations and people groups have been using geranium oil for its various medicinal and therapeutic properties. In the last few decades, there has been an inundation of laboratory derived antimicrobial products for individuals to use and come to rely upon. Yet, current research is pointing to a distinct rise in antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Medical services, especially hospitals are now being encouraged by researchers to restructure their current practices against infection and the spread of disease. With the very recent study from the National University of Ireland documenting that bacteria can survive in increasing amounts of chemical disinfectant, it is clear that other treatments will need to be implemented. Essential oils may just be part of the solution; the research indicating as such is quite promising. - 29723

How to Succeed - Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Symptoms Health-conscious women all over the world are naturally going to be surprised to know that one out of 10 women suffers from breast cancer in the US. Well, you think, you did not know that it was so common. Unfortunately, it is true. Fortunately, it can be cured, if caught in the early stages, like other cancers.

Obesity after menopause increases the risk: With the growing number of protective measures being taken to cut down on the risks of breast cancer before menopause starts, studies show that obesity clearly increases the chance of cancer after the full phase of menopause is completed. Some doctors have even stated that finding the tumors while preforming an exam or a mammogram are harder to sense because of the tumors feeling or looking like fatty tissue rather than the tumor itself because of the obesity.

In terms of a global dimension, breast cancer is without doubt the most common form of cancer prevalent amongst women. It has been shown that the occurrence of the disease in women is at least twice that of either colorectal cancer or cervical cancer, and of the order of some three times that of lung cancer. However, in the case of women, the global rate of mortality of breast cancer is approximately 25% greater than that of lung cancer. Studies have shown that, in 2005, there were 502,000 deaths globally attributable to the disease.

High Fat Diets: Studies have also been shown by the NIH (The National Institute of Health) that women who consume at least 40% of their nutrition from high fat foods, added a 15% chance of developing breast cancer than those who only consumed about 20% of foods which contained a high concentration of fats.

Alcohol and Cancer: While it is true that a glass of wine a day reduces many health problems, other alcohols such as hard liquors, mixed drinks, etc., actually increases the risk of breast cancer. Yet even with lower doses of daily alcohol usage, breast cancer is increased by 35%. And that number increases by 7% with each drink per day in what is called as DDS (Dose-Dependant-State).. Good news however; studies have shown that decreasing your intake of alcohol or quitting altogether will reverse the risk.

Exercise: For many years, research has found that exercise has been known to decrease the risks of breast cancer. Exercising only 20 minutes a day with some form of high intensity training can greatly reduce cancer and even help towards your overall health. With today's increasing number of fast food chains, and our society working 60-70 hours per week, we tend to slack on the importance of our overall health. Women especially need to be concerned with the importance of keeping your bodies in tuned with daily exercise as well as your nutrition, the proper amount of rest, and drinking at least 64oz of water daily can reduce the risks of breast cancer and help you achieve a solid foundation for living a longer life. - 29723

Part One Of Our Breast Cancer Story

In March of 2009, my wife Ann got diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Seven months later I was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma or commonly know as Kidney Cancer. What you are about to read, is the first chapter of a mini essay called "Our Breast Cancer Story" from my website. I would like to mention that everything in the following text is coming from my perspective and not necessarily my wife's.

I was travelling for business from Jersey to North Carolina. I believe it was the afternoon of March 3rd (2009), when my wife Ann called me up in my hotel room. I knew that she just went for her annual mammogram. They had her coming back in because they saw something on the slides and wanted a biopsy done. But we weren't concerned at all because that happened to us before and also to Ann's sisters. I think they call it having lumpy breasts, if a woman has little masses in her breast tissue. Anyway, there was absolutely not even the remotest thought of Breast Cancer.

Therefore, I was not prepared to receive the following message from her: "You have to be strong for me now - I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer". It felt as if the floor was pulled away under my feet. This was too much for me, this was irrational, completely. I had troubles breathing and I wanted to throw up. There was an enormous amount of guilt coming upon me, and to this day I am not sure why, but that's how I felt.

The most devastating part in that moment was the fact, that I couldn't be with my wife to comfort her. I got angry because I was so far away with no chance to get back home. If I was lucky, maybe I could get on a flight the next day.

As soon as we hung up the phone, it really hit me big time. All I could do was crying and moaning. I hope you will never ever have to experience such a situation.

When you get pushed into a situation like that, everything in life changes immediately. Things like your mortgage, the bills, saving for the kids, etc., are not top priorities any more suddenly. There is only one thing that mattered now, and that was my wife's health. I started to pray and I got under the impression that my prayers were heard. I calmed done and slowly got my senses back together.

But I realized that I had a lot of things to do. I went online and checked the flight schedule. And there it was; a flight going out back to Jersey at 10:00pm. This was my chance. I changed my initial reservation and booked me a seat on that plane. A few minutes later the airline called me to tell me that this flight is about to get cancelled due to an imminent storm on the East Coast. However, if I could make it within 40 minutes to the airport, they would get me on an earlier flight. So I had 40 minutes to get my stuff together, check out, get a cab and make it somehow onto that plane.

My hotel was very kind and offered me a lift to the airport. But I was unlucky with the driver. He meant well but coming from the Kentucky area and since he just started his new job, he missed the one and only highway exit off to the airport. And the next chance to turn around was about 15 miles away. I didn't show it, but inside of me I was falling apart.

But sometimes in my life and especially when everything seems to break down, something strange happens. Even though we were way late when I arrived at the airport, the plane was still waiting. It was actually waiting for me and three other passengers who were desperately trying to make it on time. And miraculously, just a few hours later I was back at my house in Jersey and holding my wife Ann in my arms. - 29723

Why Should You Choose A Paraben Free Anti Aging Moisturizer?

Parabens are chemicals that are found in many of the personal products that so many of us use today. They are actually a range of chemicals rather than one particular chemical.

Parabens are used in many of these products as a preservative. They are a very cheap preservative, they work exceptionally well and they are much cheaper than other alternative preservatives. It is known that parabens will penetrate the skin. Studies have shown that when parabens are applied to the skin they can be found in the blood within hours. Clearly they penetrate our bodies which is also worrying.

It is also known that parabens can mimic the actions of the female hormone estrogen. Again this is not conclusive proof that parabens are harmful to our health but is also something that raises issues that need to be investigated.

There is something called the precautionary principle. This says basically that where there is some risk to health the presumption should be that the ingredient not be used until it is proven to be safe. As it stands now these ingredients are used until proven to be unsafe. The precautionary principle suggests that the reverse should be the case.

For these reasons many people choose to select paraben free products. For example those searching for anti aging moisturizers can find excellent quality paraben free anti aging moisturizers which use natural preservatives which work as preservatives and which are non-toxic.

There is raging debate about the safety of parabens in our personal products and although it's not entirely clear that parabens are dangerous it does seem questionable and to this reason many are choosing to go paraben free. However of course the choice is yours alone.

There are now small companies that make excellent anti aging skin care products who choose to make those products entirely paraben free. They are excellent quality paraben free anti aging products that work exceptionally well, and are also free of a range of other suspect ingredients as well.

The War on Cancer: a reality-check

The "War on Cancer" initiated by President Nixon turned out to be a huge failure. After all, cancer is still undefeated and even worse; it actually continues to be on the rise with no end in sight.

Think about it: I am now 37 years old. If I go back in time, let's say about 20 years, I barely knew anybody with cancer. And let's go back another 20 years and look at the statistics or ask relatives or friends how much they knew about cancer or how many people they personally knew battling with the disease.

On average, currently 12.5 % of all women in the USA will get breast cancer at some point in their lives. That number was evidently not as bad just a few decades ago.

You probably know one or more people diagnosed with cancer. And unfortunately, it is likely that there's even someone in your family who got diagnosed.

In March of 2009 my wife Ann was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother was diagnosed with cervical cancer only a few months later. And after I encountered blood in my urine, a CT-Scan result came back with another cancer diagnosis for our family. A larger tumor was found in my left kidney.

I am about to have surgery during which my kidney will be removed entirely. It's insane. Cancer is everywhere. It's not that remote mysterious disease anymore that was likely to spare you.

So there is no way to say it: Cancer is actually growing, even though research and sciences were provided with large amounts of money over the years. And we have to admit, that President Nixon's 'War on Cancer' is far from over. Needless to say, that the situation is the same everywhere in the Western World, it's not just the USA.

Or do I just imagine all that? Is my wife's cancer, my mother's cancer and my own cancer just a coincidence or is there more to the picture. And what about the other ten people I know who also all got diagnosed in 2009.

But that's just my opinion, and I know that a lot of people disagree with my standpoint. They argue with new data and studies which supposedly show a significant reduction in new breast cancer diagnoses and mortality rates.

Well, I got to admit that math wasn't necessarily my strongest subject back in the days but I do know how to read data and graphs, furthermore, I know how easy it to tweak numbers. Actually, you don't really have to tweak them, it's much rather a matter of how you present them.

There is no doubt that improvements were made over the years in the 'War on Cancer'. However, I believe everybody would agree that we are far away from victory. There is still a lot more to do until the final battle is one. - 29723

Also a plant screening program back in'76 by the National Cancer Institute also showed that Graviola showed active cytotoxicity against cancer cells and various researchers have been following up on this research ever since and have found that Graviola was a cancer killing dynamo. Herbal products have been used worldwide almost since the time when man first walked on the earth, (well for thousands of years at least.) In the year 1938, the cancer scientist and researcher in the person of Paul Gerhardt Seeger, M.D., revealed that the real culprit of the cancerous degeneration of a cell is traced from from the destruction of a specific respiratory enzyme, cytochrome oxidase. In other terms, cancer in the cell is caused by disturbance of oxygen usage, or cell respiration.

Dr. Seeger fulfilled experimentations with hundreds of histo-chemical procedures in the Department of Cell and Virus Research in the Robert Koch Institute of Berlin, Germany. Later findings at Humbolt University in Berlin in 1956, after approximately ten years of work at Charite Hospital, confirmed his earlier research results of 1938. What Dr. Seeger found was that deactivation or destruction of the enzyme cytochrome oxidase triggers a dysfunction of the metabolism in the initial phases of energy generation in the mitochondria.

Mitochondria complete their function of producing energy through an oxygen intensive process called oxidative phosphorylation. Resulting from a series of biochemical reactions, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are broken down into smaller units. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen are released in the process. The carbon dioxide, a type of toxic waste, is rapidly removed. The hydrogen ion is carried by the electron transport chain, eventually meeting up with molecular oxygen to produce a water by product . The energy sourced out from our food components is then saved in the form of a universal energy molecule called adenosine-triphosphate (ATP).

When the enzyme cytochrome oxidase is deactivated or destroyed, excess hydrogen piles up in the cell as oxidative phosphorylation comes to a stop. The cell still needs energy, however, and is forced to shift over to a less efficient method of energy synthesis that takes place in the surrounding cytoplasm. This paves the way for the conversion of only about 20% of the possible energy that could be available, and only about one fifth of possible ATP storage. Less energy is produced for the cell's use, and less energy is stored.

With the cell's main energy generators, syntheses now significantly diminished, the groundwork is laid for cancerous degeneration. Any problems involving the operation and functioning of the mitochondria have a bad effect on all energy-requiring functions of our body. Those mice subjects that had water only developed tumours that grew much faster than the pomegranate and water groups. The quantity levels accorded to the mice were comparable to that which people might get if they drink pomegranate juice on a daily basis. And although pomegranate juice has yet to be tested on human beings with prostate cancer, the results are indeed encouraging.

The study failed to identify what aspects of pomegranate juice were responsible for addressing prostate tumour growth. But the scientists involved mentioned the antioxidant polyphenolic compounds, which are more responsive than green tea and red wine.

Pomegranate extract not only suppressed the development of cancer cells, it also worked by another means - apoptosis.

Apoptosis relates to a way that cells can break down. Cancer growths are characterized by an uncontrollable growth of cells that do not follow the normal processes of cellular differentiation of regular healthy cells. Cellular differentiation implies that the characteristics of a cell change and acquire the functions inherent to a mature, healthy cell would. For instance, liver cells have specialized liver functions, as do prostate, breast, kidney, and all other types of cells. This is right and healthy.

In tumour growths, although some cells tend fully differentiate, many only differentiate partially, and some not at all. And the tumors with more undifferentiated cells grow at a faster pace. So, inducing cellular differentiation is one approach to cancer treatment. One more procedure being tried by medical specialists and researchers in treating cancer is thru annihilation of cancerous cells. They do this through apoptosis, mentioned above, and necrosis.

Reishi - A Traditional Chinese Medicinal Mushroom

Reishi is the most searched medicinal mushroom on the Internet, used in China for at least two millennia as a panacea to alleviate things from everyday nuisances like the common cold or skin disorders to terminal conditions such as cancer.

One of the most ardent proponents of reishi is Dr Fukumi Morishige, a Japanese medical doctor working with the Linus Pauling Institute of Science & Medicine in researching the use of reishi for cancer.

Re-printed in the Chinese Traditional Medicine Part III was a speech by Dr. Morishige that included the case studies listed below.

Born in Japan, Dr. Morishige was unavoidably familiar with reishi long before hearing of its use in cancer treatment. Naturally, he believed the same as any other medically trained professional, that perhaps reishi might yield some marginal results on benign conditions but he felt certain any further claims were surely exaggerated. Not until two of his own cancer patients exhibited signs of remission, which they attributed to their use of reishi, did his curiosity peak.

First was a 39-year-old woman with lung carcinoma. The hospitals she had visited all told her she was too far gone and there was nothing they could do to help her. As a serious secondary complication, she also exhibited chest cavity edema. None-the-less, by the time she had her first appointment with Dr. Morishige, the symptoms of her illness had disappeared. The woman credited her recovery to the use of reishi, which her husband had administered to her at 4 grams per day.

The second case was a young boy suffering from congenital liver cancer. At the age of 5, his attending physician determined that the condition was terminal and discontinued any further treatment. At 9 years of age, the boy's parents brought him to see Dr. Morishige who could then find no remaining traces of the cancer. The parents explained to Dr. Morishige that they had been feeding their son reishi via a naso-gastric tube. It was at this point Dr. Morishige determined that reishi's effect on cancer deserved further study.

Below are five cases using reishi in combination with Vitamin C (to prevent side effects):

Case 1: A 70-year-old male patient who had lost consciousness due to a 5 cm (2 in.) brain tumor was administered 6 gm of reishi per day starting in June of 1986. By September, he had regained consciousness. He continued to take reishi orally after regaining consciousness, now 3 gm/day. By December of that same year, brain scans showed the tumor had diminished in size. Once the size of the tumor had been reduced to 1 cm, the patient was released from the hospital and returned to live with his family.

For many years women were told that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) offered as Estrogen Therapy (ET) or a combination of Estrogen and Progesterone (Hormone Therapy or HT) was the easy way to avoid any symptoms of the menopause.

Unfortunately doctors are beginning to discover that women have a unique hormone profile. That means that the effect of hormone replacement therapy could work differently to different people. Rather like the fact that one girls acne cure does nothing for her best friend, acne is also linked to hormones.

Recent medical studies shows that there is a link between HRT and breast cancer risk. Some doctors believe that estrogen is broken down within the breast tissue, and the resultant compound can then bind to strands of DNA and cause breast cancer that way.

Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to isolate one cause of cancer and blame it on one specific thing because hereditary, diet and lifestyle all play a part. At this point there may be a link between hormone replacement therapy and cancer but many more medical studies need to be conducted to ascertain exactly how that link works. At this time doctors think that there is a definite increased risk of breast cancer when ET and HT are used beyond five years, but other doctors feel that the risk is there period.

If you are a breast cancer survivor, then it may be that HRT can stimulate the growth of small tumors, or hidden cells called micrometastases. There is no clear link between women who have a genetic risk of cancer and HRT. But today doctors are erring on the side of caution and making a recommendation that women with a cancer risk avoid HRT. Other risk factors are women that experience the menopause later in life.

However, there are a number of women who are comfortable with the risks and want to take HRT anyway. There is an evidence that a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables will regulate the levels of estrogen in your system naturally. Macro nutrients are not going to do any harm and there is a strong argument that they can ward off a cancer risk in their own right as well as regulating hormones. Another benefit is adequate exercise which does not mean going to a gym.
